Compare Cruise Bargains by Season
Every region has quieter weeks. This is the map.
Find My Cruise BargainTo compare cruise bargains by season, line up each region’s peak weeks against its quieter ones. The table below shows the general pattern for cruises from North America; exact weeks shift with school calendars and holidays.
| Region | Peak demand | Where bargains tend to sit | The trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Caribbean & Bahamas | Winter holidays, spring break, summer school holidays | Late August to early December, outside Thanksgiving | Hurricane season (June–November) |
| Alaska | Mid-June to mid-August | May and September | Cooler, and in September wetter |
| Mediterranean | June to August | April–May, October–November, and winter where lines stay | Shorter days, some resorts closed in winter |
| Northern Europe & Norway | June to August | May and early September | Short season, cooler weather |
| Bermuda | Summer | Start and end of its spring-to-fall season | Cooler water at the edges |
| New England & Canada | Late September to mid-October foliage | Summer weeks before the foliage rush | No fall color |
| Mexican Riviera & Baja | Winter and holidays | Late spring and late summer to fall | Heat and late-season storms |
| Hawaii | Winter holidays and summer | Spring and fall | Little real downside |
Region Notes
Caribbean. The deepest everyday bargains in cruising sit in late summer and fall, when children are back in school. Ships still sail, and itineraries can switch between eastern and western routes to avoid storms. See Caribbean Cruise Ports for what to do in each port.
Alaska. May brings snowy peaks and fewer crowds; September brings autumn color and quieter towns. Both are the season’s value weeks. Our Alaska Port Excursions site covers each port.
Europe. Spring and late autumn are cooler, quieter and kinder on the wallet than August, and some lines keep ships in the western Mediterranean through winter. Port tips are on Europe Port Excursions.

Mexico. West Coast sailings to Baja and the Mexican Riviera run most of the year from California, and the shoulder months are good value; see Mexico Cruising. Hawaii. Spring and fall are pleasant and quieter; our sister site Cruise Hawaii covers Hawaii cruising in depth.
Season Questions
Is it safe to cruise the Caribbean in hurricane season?
Cruise lines watch the weather closely and change itineraries to avoid storms, so the usual effect is a changed port or an extra sea day rather than danger. Travel insurance and a flexible attitude are wise. The season runs from June 1 to November 30, according to the National Hurricane Center.
Is Alaska in May or September really cheaper?
The edges of the season usually have more availability and lower demand than July and August. May tends to be drier; September brings fall color and the chance of northern lights, with more rain.
Remember that a bargain season is only a bargain if it suits your trip: a cooler Alaska week is perfect for hikers, while a family wanting pool time may be happier paying more for summer.
Shoulder seasons also bring quieter ports. A Mediterranean town in late October or an Alaska port in early May feels very different from the same place on a summer day with several big ships in, and many travelers find that the calmer visit is worth more than the saving itself.
